Experience and Approach
Dan is an experienced Clinical Supervisor and Clinical Social Worker with over 23 years supporting individuals and practitioners in the USA and Aotearoa New Zealand. His practice is grounded in a strengths-based, culturally responsive approach, drawing on specialist training in EMDR, CBT, and other evidence-based modalities. He also brings experience as an AOD and ACC counsellor, alongside qualifications as a professional interpreter; hablo Español e também Português.
In his primary role with Te Whatu Ora, Dan provides clinical leadership to social work teams and undertakes associate clinical manager responsibilities as required. His broader leadership experience includes roles as a Duly Authorised Officer under the Mental Health Act, Clinical Lead for the Co-existing Substance Use and Mental Health Problems Pathway, HoNOS trainer, and trainer in Cognitive Behavioural Approaches. He provides both individual and group supervision to a range of professionals, including social workers, occupational therapists, nurses undertaking CBT training, ACC counsellors, and professionals working in non-clinical roles.
Dan’s clinical background includes extensive experience in mental health and addiction services, where he has conducted comprehensive psychiatric and risk assessments and provided treatment for complex presentations for children, adolescents, and adults. He is skilled in working with a wide range of presentations, including trauma-related disorders, dissociative identity disorder, paedophilic disorder, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions, substance use issues, bipolar affective disorder, and other mood and anxiety disorders.
Dan's therapeutic approach integrates EMDR, CBT, MI, DBT, ACT, SFBT, and Positive Psychology.
In supervision, Dan creates a reflective, collaborative, and supportive space that promotes professional growth, ethical practice, and clinician wellbeing. He supports supervisees to deepen their clinical thinking, enhance their confidence in working with complexity, and maintain safe and effective practice. Dan is available for supervision sessions in the mornings (7:00–8:30am), evenings (5:00–10:00pm), and some weekends.
Outside of his professional work, Dan enjoys spending time with his family, gardening, listening to a wide range of music, and travelling within New Zealand and internationally.
